"Jewellery information for the people from the people"
The HCJ Project is a "mashup" a number of separate elements:
The main site , the forums and the site friends, with additional elements like the calendars (details).

The HCJ-Project
The main site
The "main site" presents information from " full site members" (people professionally involved in contemporary jewellery who's application to join has been accepted by a member vote).
There are two full membership types....
1. Standard members are artists and gallery owners who add content to the site themselves.
2. Assisted members pay a small fee and everything is added for them.
See also: who runs the HCJ Project?
Did you know? You can embed content from the HCJ Project on your site!

If you wish to join the HCJ project as a main site member, the process is as follows:

  1. 1. Register using the Login / register link in the sidebar.
  2. 2. After completing registration, make sure you are logged in, have read the terms, and then fill in the "member application form".
  3. 3. The application is presented to and voted upon by "site members" in the forums.
  4. 4. If you elected to be an "assisted member" please pay for the "assisted subscription" only after your membership has been approved and before sending the text and images you wish to be used for your artist or gallery listing. Further submissions e.g. any exhibitions in which you are represented are welcome over the duration of your assisted subscription.

The site forums
The site forums operate as a "sub-site" and are open to everybody who is interested in contemorary jewellery.
Within the public forums are the site member forums, which is where site members democratically shape and run the HCJ Project. More about the forums ...

Site friendsSite friends

Site friends can write on the comment wall, invite their friends to join and can set-up and maintain a public profile (if they wish).

Please note:
Site friends are different from site members. Site friends cannot author content on the main site.
Site members can be site friends too if they want!

Calendars

The HCJ project runs several calendars (exhibition / shows calendars plus the workshops and seminars calendar).
Visitors can add information from these calendars to their own calendar (if they use Google calendar), keeping tabs on dates which are of interest them without having to visit the HCJ Project site.

Currently the calendar submission form is publicly accessible.
Later, as the projects prominence grows, to stop spam submissions the calendar submission form may be made site member access only.
Members who wish to submit information on a regular basis should ask for direct write access.

Did you know? You can embed a calendar on your site!

Details
There are three main aspects to the HCJ Project (ways that people can contribute to it).
1: The "main site" which is where standard members login and add their content themselves. Their "static entry" e.g. their artist or gallery entry: but also their news or exhibitions, and any new work or articles in the members blog.
Assisted members are basically the same: except that they are featured automatically and have their text and images added and hosted for them.

2: The forums are open to public registration, any one with an interest in contemporary jewellery can register and take part in the forums. They offer opportunities for debate and networking. There is some "hoop jumping" required in registration, e.g. new registrations must post one "introduction post" in the introductions forum, before they can post in the rest of the (public) forums. This is a mesure to prevent spam and works very well.
Members of the main site need to register separately in the forums. Why? They can use the same details they used when registering initially on the main site if they wish. Within the forums are the "site member forums" which are "invisible" to public forum members. It is within this area that site members vote on new member applications and put forward or discuss project policy changes.

3: Site friends: this is a "bolt-on" social element of the site which enables people to "join" (as a "site friend"), comment on the wall and set-up a Friend Connect profile. This is an implementation of OpenSocial. the OpenSocial movment is very new, and there is allot of confusion as to what it is and where it is leading. If you are interested then I would be very happy (in the forums) to explain the details of what it is and why it is good for the site. Site members don't have to become a "site friend" but it would be logical for them to do so, as it would enable them to interact (respond to comments on the site wall etc).
The "site friends" element isn't like signing up for the site a third time. Your Google friend connect profile is yours, and goes-with-you across the web to any other Google friend connect enabled site which you have joined and where you elect to show your profile.
